The storm raged outside while Simon, and I shivered in Gaston’s room. The room smelled like wet dog, thanks in part to Simon and the soaked werewolf currently toweling Simon off while I changed out of my wet clothes.

Through the floor, I could hear the quiet murmur of the pack chatting downstairs. Some of them had gone home once the search was called off, but a few had stayed to weather the storm there.

“I feel real bad about making everyone worry so much,” I said and let my drenched shirt fall with a wet schlup to the floor. “Y’all didn’t have to make such a big deal for me.”

“Of course we did. You’re…” Gaston trailed off.

I paused, halfway through unbuttoning my jeans.

There it was, the conversation we’d been silently refusing to have all day. Or probably longer, if I was being honest. Looking back, it was obvious how we’d been drawn to each other. The two of us were just big, thick-headed idiots for not seeing it.

“Go on,” I urged. “Say it.”

“Say what?”

I crossed my arms over my chest. Gaston knew full well what I wanted him to say. “This game’s getting old, Sunshine. I think it’s time we quit beating around the bush and just laid it out.”

He sighed. The floor creaked and fur ruffled as he stood. “You going to run away if I do?” There was a hint of sourness in his tone, one I deserved.

“Can’t,” I said with a shrug. “Don’t know if you noticed, but it’s rainin’ cats and critters out there.” I felt around for the edge of the bed and sat down to pull off my wet boots and soaked socks. “So how long have you known we were mates?”

Gaston snorted, and I heard the wet sound of more clothes hitting the floor. “It doesn’t work exactly like that, you know. It just means we’re compatible. You have to accept the bond before it’s real. Otherwise, it’s just a strong feeling.”

“Dammit, Gaston.” I leaned forward, resting an elbow on my knee and facing him. “Don’t you think I’ve been around werewolves long enough to have some idea of how it works? I don’t need a lecture. I know what I’m in for, okay?” I paused to let that sink in. “Was it when we were together? Or did you know before?”

He sighed. “I didn’t know, but I kind of feel stupid. I should’ve known. I mean, we spent every waking moment together when we were younger, and when I left, I got so sick. I chalked it up to the flight, but I was down for two weeks, and it took me months to come back from. I should’ve seen it. Deep down, I think I knew. I just didn’t want it to be true.”

I nodded. I’d heard of that happening before, too. Moon sick, they called it. Happened when someone’s mate rejected them for someone else. If I turned him down now, he’d go through it all over again, maybe worse.

But I couldn’t let a little moon sickness make my decision for me.
